New CS Curriculum: Transition Plan for Students
From CSWiki
These are intended as rough notes on strategies we can use in transitioning students.
The transition for students will depend primarily on (a) what courses the student has completed in the major and (b) what courses we end up offering in the first year. If we do switch to the new curriculum in 2008-2009, the two scheduling questions for 2008-2009 will be whether to offer CSC362 Compilers or CSC302 Languages and whether to offer CSC223 Software Design or CSC225 Databases and Web Application Design.
It is likely that we will have to treat students on a case-by-case basis. Hence, these are just some general strategies.
- Students who have just taken CSC151 will be able to transition easily into the new curriculum.
- Students who have taken CSC152 or CSC153 (and nothing else) will declare under the new curriculum and should be permitted to count CSC152 or CSC153 for CSC207.
- Students who have declared the major and not taken CSC223/CSC362 should be encouraged to take CSC223 or CSC225.
- Students who have declared the major and not taken CSC302 should be permitted to take CSC302 or CSC362.
