In 2005, Grinnell College launched a program designed to enrich and diversify our curriculum, bringing in subjects that lie outside or across traditional disciplines or are novel or unconventional. This program, the Expanding Knowledge Initiative (EKI), includes an increased emphasis on integrative and interdisciplinary study, research, and teaching, supported by a modest expansion of the faculty.

The Department of Computer Science submitted a proposal to add a faculty member under the EKI program. The Executive Council and the College administration adopted our proposal. We are currently in the process of hiring the new faculty member, who will start in August 2008.

A report announcing the EKI, "Expanding Knowledge Initiative and Re-engaging in the Liberal Arts", explains the rationale and implementation of the project in greater detail.
